Rick Turns 29... Again

We celebrate Rick's 30th birthday with a night at the pub.
Happy Birthday Honey!

The Bump Keeps Growing

People keep cracking up when they see me turn to the side. I guess my bump doesn't fully reveal itself when I face forward.
What do you think?

Celebrating Howie with Friends and Family... now is he ready to come yet?!

The Kindergarten Shower

Ah yes, it is only after about a week that I have the energy to write about the shower my kindergartners threw for me. Due to unusually high levels of excitement and a high consumption of sugar, the experience was touching and tiring all the same.

We played games. When it came to the objectives of winning, some understood better than others. For example, there was a baby relay for teams to perform tasks on a baby doll. I'm fairly certain that no one in the class realized that "relay" means "race". So rather than frantically going about the baby tasks (such as diapering a doll, putting socks on it and pushing in a stroller) the children pleasantly enjoyed the experience while the adults were wildly trying to motivate them to move faster.

I recieved a beautiful scrapbook of advice from parents, staff and the children about how to care for a baby. There are so many true jems of wisdom in there, like "Being a good parent doesn't mean always saying yes- sometimes it means saying no" or "Don't criticize how your husband cares for your baby, or he might stop trying" or "Don't ever think of Howie as your property... he is a soul in a tiny body who's been entrusted to your care for a short time. Treat him like the tiny person that he is. Listen to what he tries to tell you..." Some of my favorite kindergarten responses include:
"Don't let your baby drink from the (garden) hose"
"Don't run with your baby in your arms"
"If the baby is scared, buy him a nightlight"
"Let him play a lot, but make him clean up his toys and then give him money for putting his toys away"
"Pray with your baby so he knows God"
Such wisdom...

Kindergartners' Perspectives on Pregnancy

My kindergartners have been a source of new perspectives and interesting questions throughout my pregnancy. Here are a few of my favorites...
Howie enjoys storytime after we eat lunch. Many days, the children can see him jumping around in my stomach as I read a story. Their eyes light up and they sit up a little straighter. They usually ask, "Did he like that story?" After a particularly robust exercise session by Howie, one of the little boys says to me as he is waving his arms, "Mrs. Stevens, it's like your baby is in there going, 'Let me out, let me out!' but he has no door." I told him that eventually Howie will have a door, but did not go into any further explanation. Thankfully, he didn't ask.
The children often ask me about his development, "Does he have legs? Does he have a nose? Does he have eyes?" The other day, we talked a little bit about how he does indeed have eyes and he can see light and darkness. A quiet lull hit the kindergarten crowd, then a child pipes up and says, "Can he see us right now?"
And the million dollar question that everyone is asking, "Mrs. Stevens, when will your baby come?" I just smile a little and shrug my shoulders, "When he is ready my friends, when he is ready."
They are throwing me a baby shower tomorrow. It should be a fun and insightful afternoon...
